Beginnings — [ edit ] The Yonsei University Medical School dates to April 10,when the first modern hospital to practice Western medicine in Korea, Gwanghyewon, was established.
April A book by none grandmasters aimed at fellow club players - how refreshing! I must begin this review by quoting some of the wording on the back cover. We soon learn that the audience for the book are the amateur club and internet players and it is written by two people who have played their careers at club and county level, thus they write from personal experience.
The book is a good pocket size, and some pages in length with the right amount in my view of diagrams to text. I reviewed this on a flight to Budapest and the return flight also without a chess set in front of me so that shows just how easy it is to follow. I believe the book is printed on demand and the paper and print are decent quality.
There is a foreword by GM Ray Keene, a short introduction by the authors and 12 chapters following that. Chapter 11 is entitled 'Some Exemplars' and consists of a king and pawn endgame quiz of 30 positions which I thoroughly enjoyed and can be used for club mates and juniors alike.
Amateurs love their chess openings and the first chapter looks at choice and style, making the valid point that some players are more intuitive in openings and require less book knowledge.
We club players either stick to the same openings or vary quite a lot and there is no correct way but you are asked to consider how to approach this.
Most of the games are taken from the games of both authors so they are both well qualified to comment on them. There are some golden tips such as castling on the same side as your opponent in the Caro Kann, and that the pieces are 'dead' at the start of the game but our job is to magically make them come alive.
It may sound like a Harry Potter scene but of course it is absolutely spot on. In all this is a very useful book for amateur chess players. It contains many personal thoughts, it is written in a common-sense language and mercifully there are not endless reams of variations to plough through.
There are chapters on emotions, initiative, computers and one of my favourites - the simultaneous display. I give a few of these in my role as manager of chess in prisons and it was really thought provoking.
There is really good advice here in recommending that when engaged in a simul against a master the amateur should set themselves up to play with a view to learning something from the experience. The main aspect about the book that I personally noted was that I 'connected' with it. It is written by people like me who played chess before computers and chess engines.
They had to use their own brain power to locate information and come up with ideas and improvements in those days - it was not available at the click of a button as today. I was curious as to why the book is dedicated to C J de Mooi, the former President of the English Chess Federation and I was further intrigued as to why Ray Keene wrote the introduction.
Keene does say that the authors have laboured over the book for many years and I think it has been time well spent. In an effort to be totally objective, I would perhaps have liked an index of games and opponents but that's a niggly point.
That omission is more than compensated for by the rest of the book. Did the book achieve its purpose? It did for me and I believe it will for club and county players who immerse themselves in the pages. Finally I did like the fact that the reader is instantly challenged with two chess problems before they even get to the introduction.
That was a fun way to start the book and I am pleased to say I got both studies right!
